About What You Need to Know About Child Support

What You Need to Know About Child Support is an eLearning course designed to help staff working in prevention services prepare to have conversations with their families about child support. This course will provide them with an overview of the child support process, introduce them to tools that will allow them to access individual child support case details, and provide guidance on the use of motivational interviewing techniques in their discussions about child support.

  • Introduction to Child Support and Office of Child Support Services
  • Office of Child Support Services Agency Overview
  • Avoiding and Lifting Sanctions
  • Child Support Snapshot Basics
  • Motivational Interviewing: Talking to a Client About Snapshot
  • Motivational Interviewing: Talking to a Client About Child Support

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for staff working in prevention services.

Benefits of the Program

Participants will:

  • Understand the child support process from inception to the court hearing and beyond.
  • Learn about Snapshot, an online tool that helps service providers assist noncustodial parents to manage their child support cases.
  • Recognize how to apply motivational interviewing techniques in conversations about child support with custodial and noncustodial parents.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites required to take this course.

Course Components

Once enrolled in the course, learners will complete:

  • An online pre-test.
  • An interactive, one-hour eLearning program composed of 6 modules.
  • An online course evaluation.
  • An online post-test.

Completion of all components is necessary in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Continuing Education Units

The New York City Administration for Children’s Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0402. This course is 1 contact hour/0.1 CEUs. CEU credit is contingent upon completion of all course components.
