About Medicine Safety for Children

This learning program will provide information to child welfare professionals on how to recognize medication hazards in families’ homes and how to discuss with families the importance of safeguarding medication following a strengths based approach. Staff will learn about the proper use of medication lock boxes and storage bags.

Who Should Enroll?

This course is designed for direct service staff and supervisors in child welfare.

Benefits of the Program

Participants will:

  • Understand the dangers of child exposure to harmful medications.
  • Get information on how to safely secure medications.
  • Be prepared to talk to families about safe storage, proper disposal and the availability of resources including the Poison Control Center.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Components

Once enrolled in the course, learners will complete:

  • An online pre-test.
  • An interactive, one hour eLearning program.
  • An online post-test.

Completion of all components is necessary in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Continuing Education Units

The New York City Administration for Children’s Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0402. This course is 1 contact hours/.1 CEUs.
