LGBTQ+ Refresher (Virtual Course)

A Learning Program for NYC Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Professionals

About the LGBTQ+ Virtual Training

This virtual course will consist of a combination of eLearning modules and virtual synchronous sessions. Learners will first complete two 90-minute eLearning modules that build on staff’s existing knowledge, skills, and ability to apply best practices for promoting the safety, respect and affirmation of LGBTQ+ youth while they are in care or receiving services through Administration for Children’s Services providers. Learners will then participate in two 90-minute Instructor-led virtual sessions. The first session explains the difference between biological sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation; correctly defines “transgender”, “gender non-conforming,” and “non-binary” describe LGBTQ+ youth using affirming language; names two negative outcomes that occur for LGBTQ+ youth who experience rejection or hostility because of their gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation. The second demonstrates an accurate understanding of ACS’s LGBTQ-related policies and how to apply them in their day-to-day work.
