A Learning Program for NYC Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Professionals
This virtual course consists of two (2) 90-minute modules. This course builds on staff’s existing knowledge, skills, and ability to apply best practices for promoting the safety, respect and affirmation of LGBTQ+ youth while they are in care or receiving services through Administration for Children’s Services providers.
Virtual Session 1 (90 minutes) explains the difference between biological sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation; correctly defines “transgender”, “gender non-conforming”, and “non-binary” describe LGBTQ+ youth using affirming language; names two negative outcomes that occur for LGBTQ+ youth who experience rejection or hostility because of their gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation; name two actions that are affirming of LGBTQ+ young people and describe 2 positive outcomes that come from being affirming; correctly identifies at least 2 best practices and 2 practices to avoid and explain why they are important for providing affirming services for LGBTQ+ youth.
Virtual Session II (90 minutes) demonstrates an accurate understanding of ACS’s LGBTQ—related policies and how to apply them in their day-to-day work; describes how they can individually implement best practices and organizational strategies to reflect ACS’ agency-wide LGBTQ-affirming policies.
This program is designed for direct service staff and supervisors in child welfare and juvenile justice.
The pre-requisite for this refresher course is completion of the full 1- day LGBTQ training.
