About Include, Empower, and Affirm (Foundational) Virtual Training

This course will review the key issues, needs and strengths of LGBTQ children and youth. Learners will identify ways to prevent discrimination, harassment, and violence against LGBTQ children as well as review the rights of LGBTQ children, youth, and families while involved in Children’s Services and contracted provider agency staff. Additionally, learners will apply best practices to foster supportive, inclusive, and affirming environments for LGBTQ children, youth, and families.

Who Should Attend?

This course is required for all direct service staff and supervisors in Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice.

Benefits of the Program

Participants will: 

  • Be given guidance on providing safe, respectful, and affirming services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. 
  • Receive an overview of ACS’ policies and how to apply what they have learned into best practices when working with LGBTQ people. 
  • Gain a better understanding regarding the needs of LGBTQ children and youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems to be more fully prepared to provide the specific services and support for this vulnerable population. 
  • Adopt a more sensitive, respectful and culturally competent practice as well as strategies to address bias in order to meet the needs of the youth and their families.

Course Prerequisites

Prior to attending this course, learners are required to have completed: 

  • An online pre-test accessed through the Cornerstone Learning Management System.

Course Components

Once enrolled in the course, learners will complete: 

  • An online pre-test. 
  • An four-hour virtual instructor led workshop. 
  • An online post-test.

Completion of all components is necessary to receive a Certificate of Completion.
