About the Family Time Virtual Training

Family Time is one of the most important predictors of successful reunification. This training focuses on using the guidance and practices from ACS’ Visiting Policy to support quality parent-child visiting (aka Family Time) that promotes reunification and permanency. The program presents an approach to Family Time inviting more natural and positive interactions among family members. It will also highlight the importance of assessment to advance visits to the least restrictive level of supervision that supports safety. Finally, this program reinforces the value of effectively managed family time to maintaining and strengthening parent-child relationships. Primary course content includes: 

  • Principles of family time and the role it plays in permanency planning. 
  • Guidance and practice for effectively supervising visits. 
  • The importance of preparing for and processing visits. 
  • Assessment strategies to determine the least restrictive level of supervision that supports safety.

Who Should Attend?

This course is intended for all ACS and/or contract agency staff who supervise visits. Supervisors and managers will also benefit from the guidance in this training.

Benefits of the Program

Participants will: 

  • Learn how family time reduces the trauma of removal and separation, supporting child well-being and reinforcing parents’ roles and responsibilities during a family’s involvement with the child welfare system. 
  • Recognize the importance of family time in successful permanency planning. 
  • Use the ACS visiting policy and assessment strategies to determine the most appropriate level of supervision supporting safety. 
  • Apply appropriate guidelines and strategies to safely supervise visits and help families progress to the safest, least restrictive family time. 
  • Implement effective pre- and post-visit meetings to support quality family time.

 There are no prerequisites associated with this course.

Course Components

 Once enrolled in this course, learners will complete: 

  • An interactive, 2.5 hour virtual instructor-led training

Completion of all components is necessary to receive a Certificate of Completion.
